Prepress is the most important part before printing – proper prepress ensures a high-quality result that meets your expectations. Therefore, it is worth reading and following our advice carefully.

Starting from 2023, Printon has adopted the new international offset printing standard ISO 12647-2:2013, which can also be successfully used for printing on new optically brightened papers.

For clients, this means the use of two new ICC profiles when preparing print files:

1) PSO coated v3 for print on coated paper based on the new reference FOGRA51 that replaces the previously used profile ISO coated v2 based on FOGRA39.

2) PSO uncoated v3 for print on uncoated paper based on the new reference FOGRA52 that replaces the previously used profile ISO uncoated v2 based on FOGRA47.

Recommendations

The size of the designed product must be specified in the design program to match the ordered product size. Example: if the order is for 148×210 mm, the document must be set to 148 mm x 210 mm (Page Size – TrimBox).

All pages must be the same size, and each page should be in the file individually, not as spread pages.

Add 3-5 mm bleed to all outer edges of the design in the design program. The bleed should be equal on all sides, with the design centered on the page.

Text, numbers, and important design elements must be at least 3 mm from the edge. For stapled binding, consider the inner page margins.

Add crop marks automatically when generating the PDF. Crop marks must be placed 3 mm away from the edge of the clean size (TrimBox). Do not add other printing marks such as color bars, registration marks, etc.

All colors must be in CMYK color space or black and white. According to the ISO12647-2:2013 standard, new profiles are used:

For coated paper: PSOCoated_v3.icc

For uncoated paper: PSOUncoated_v3.icc

Convert all custom-named spot colors to CMYK unless Pantone colors are used. Pantone colors must be labeled with their full name and number, ensuring no variations in naming that would create additional colors. Pantone colors are intended for 100% coverage printing. Any percentage less than 100% is at the client’s risk.

RGB and Lab colors are not allowed in offset printing. Do not use “Registration Color” from the color palette.

Small black texts, lines, and tables must be set to 100% black (K).

Line thickness should not be less than 0.2 pt (0.05 mm) when printed in a single color.

Natural deep black percentages should be C 40%, M 30%, Y 30%, K 100%.

These elements must be defined as 100% black (K) in the file, and the lines and objects should be in vector graphics.

Submit separate files for the book’s content, covers, UV varnish, foil, embossing, endpapers (except for those part of the content), and die-cut drawings.

Endpapers can be the same size as the content, with four pages for the front and four for the back, in the correct order. These can also be done as a two-page spread. If the endpapers are part of the content, ensure that the first page of the front endpapers is blank, and the last page of the back endpapers is blank, as they will be glued to the cover board.

Send covers as spreads, including the inside covers. For softcover books, request the spine thickness from the printing house. For hardcover books, request the exact cover design and follow its dimensions. In our printing house, softcover books have grooves 7 mm from the spine, and hardcover books have 9 mm from the spine (follow the cover drawing).

Images must have a resolution of 300 dpi, and bitmap images must be 600 dpi.

Fonts must be embedded in the PDF file.

Do not use white text (knockout) smaller than 8 pt or with a height less than 3 mm and line thickness under 0.3 mm on black or colored backgrounds. Italic or serif fonts on colored objects must be at least 10 pt.

For black design elements and text (100% K) on colored backgrounds, black overprint must be applied. For black areas where overprint is to be avoided (e.g., when covering an image or background), use non-overprint black: C 1%, M 1%, Y 1%, K 100%. Color objects (except 100% black) must not have overprint. Black objects (100% black text and backgrounds) will have overprint applied automatically by the printing house to improve print quality.

For color objects that meet, the darker object should overlap the lighter object by 0.08 mm for trapping. This is especially important for Pantone colors.

For white text on a multi-colored black background, apply “keep-away trapping” to reduce registration issues by adding a 0.1–0.15 mm outline of non-overprint black (C 1%, M 1%, Y 1%, K 100%) around the text. This can be used for larger text.
